Is there a cure for cancer? No, of course not. If there was a cure for cancer, more than 500,000 Americans would not die of this deadly disease each year. Well, maybe there is a cure. A study came out of the University of Alberta in Canada showing that a drug called dichloroacetate (DCA) killed most, if not all forms of cancer with little to no side effects. Yet another benefit is that it is extremely cheap, costing as little as two dollars per serving because it is not a patentable drug. Why haven’t we heard about it then? Could it be that drug companies won’t make any money by researching the drug, then selling it because it is so cheap? Is it possible that major drug companies are perfectly content with making over 400 billion dollars per year from cancer treatments (radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, etc.)? Don’t think that this is the first time this has ever happened. Big drug companies have swept many potential cures for cancer (natural cures, oxygen therapy, cleansing, etc.) under the rug simply because they make more money by treating the disease rather than curing it. Does anyone else find it funny that we have made such amazing scientific strides in humanity in the last 50 years (space, the internet, computers, etc.), but we have yet to find a cure for cancer? Drug companies aren’t looking to cure the disease; they want to treat it and make it manageable. That’s the way that they would make the most money. It’s a sad truth, but a truth nonetheless.

It is really difficult to find the words to say to this blog when I am not really informed on the topic. Reading this I feel absolutely infuriated and I have a hard time accepting it as the truth. It is just so hard to believe! Who makes that kind of a decision? EVERYONE knows someone who has had some type of cancer…and since this is true, it is hard to see how “those people” could make that sort of decision after seeing someone they know and love suffer from this disease. Why would it be more important to have money than watch people who you care about die? I cannot even fathom it. If this is the truth…do these people even consider that they too may get cancer someday? What happens then?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree on Sarah's opninion. It is hard to talk about these type of facts when there are no statistics given. If this is a true fact I am completely against it. How much more selfish can these companies be. People dying every day of cancer, while there is a cure, but companies throw them away because of money. Not only is it wrong but these companies are indirectly responsible of many deaths of cancer patients.
ReplyDeleteI personally have gone through this situation. My grandmother died of cancer in 2004. They sent her to die at home because she was not going to last 2 weeks. She took chemotherapy for about 2 months. It is hard and to find out now that possibly my grandmother could be alive today because of a possible cure, brings anger and disgrace to my heart when I think about this blog.
I can only hope that in the near future we can all go back and learn that it is not about the money, its about caring and serving others with care and not for benefits.
I agree with both of the above posts. There are no facts given in the post so it's hard to believe that these drugs could actually "cure" cancer. They probably aren't developed enough and need more tests done to make sure they dont harm people or that they are actually effective and not just make cancer go away for a time and then come back. I think that if there is a drug that could cure it then the government would make sure it is available for cancer patients, it should be illegal if it's not.
ReplyDeleteif it is true then what the companies are doing is awful. My Mother had cancer twice and if there was a way that she could have taken a drug and been rid of the cancer that consumed 3 years of her life it would have been so much easier and safer. Chemo and radiation can be dangerous for people because it is so rough on the body and it affects you physically and mentally. I do believe when there is a drug safe and developed enough to be released in hospitals it will help many people throughout the world and more people will be able to live full, happy, cancer-free lives.
Thanks to god I have not had a family member that has had cancer. I do not know what to think about this blog because I havent heard anything about it either.
ReplyDeleteI dont know if I could completely agree because if there was such a cure in a university, people would not care about if the big companies would sell it or not, they would travel to that university and purchase the drug. If people knew about this drug and bought the drug from the university, they would stop using all the treatments the big companies provide and the companies would notice that they are losing money and would actually take that drug under their company, and sell it.
In my opinion, if that drug excisted, there would be a low percentage of people without cancer but that is not the case.
Call this an anarchist's view on life and our government, but here's my spin on this: without us being sick the drug companies, the government, the healthcare companies make no money. MONEY, thats basis of everything good and bad in america. If people didn't have cancer then healthcare companies and insurance companies wouldn't make millions. if we didn't die by the rate of 500,000 americans a year, we'd over populate and the government wouldn't know what to do with this. Personally, in my eyes you'd have to be naiive to believe that this is the cure for cancer. Would you believe that the government, if not ours some other has known for some amount of time. what about all the other cancer treatment breakthroughs that we've never heard of happening here, but heard of in other countries that are super successful.
ReplyDeleteNot to sound bitter, but from a person who lost their mother to cancer, i wouldn't believe this drug existed. Logically, it would have been released already, the demand would be so large by now that the resources would have been depleted. Or is this the case, will the resources be depleted if everyone starts to use it who has cancer? how many doses does it take to be cured? To me the details of the medicine are so unclear it just doesn't seem real. why hasn't this blown up on the news.
once, about a year or two ago, there was a story flying around about a country near the meditterean finding a cure in the seaweed. that wasn't real.
I feel like i can't believe in a cure for cancer until it's been exploited and used by the thousands to millions of people who've had it and have been cured.
This is a topic that I am very interested in, and is something that gets me very worked up when i read about it. After reading Matt's initial post, as sad as it is I completely agreed. I for one believe that there really may be a cure for cancer. Perhaps it has not been fully tested, or maybe it is not completely tested, but I do believe that somewhere in the world there is a better way to cure cancer than the ones that are currently available. I understand the issue of how much money cancer treatment and research brings into the medical field and the drug companies, and I think that this issue is a huge reason as to why the government may not want this drug released. But in my opinion, another reason why the government does not want to permanently cure cancer is that if all the people with cancer in the world were cured and survived, the Earth would not be able to support that many people. I know it sounds awful and I know its hard to believe but control of population size is a huge issue in the world.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with Matt that the cure for cancer is out there, I think that it may not be exactly what we think it is. I think that people continue to make advances in the sciences and technology, so why has the cure for cancer not been found yet? Cancer has affected everyone in life, and I too know someone close to me who is fighting this disease. It is so hard to take in this information and not be angry and disgusted with the world. The thought of all the people who die and suffer from cancer each year makes me nauseous, and this topic is one that is always controversial as well as upsetting to many people.
I disagree with some of the above posts. I read thoroughly about this new cancer drug, and the results are astonishing. Almost all of the cancer cells were completely killed, with no side affects to the patient at all. This drug is what most people would call a "miracle" drug. Not only have I read about it, I saw it on the news very recently and they showed a demonstration of the drug working on cancer cells. It truly was incredible. This was a drug that was shoved away so that drug companies could make more money, it truly is. The thing that concerns me the most is, if we use this drug won't the cancer cells develop an immunity towards it?
ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure what to believe. I would like to believe that they really found a cure for cancer but if the drug companies were trying to make money, wouldn't someone have leaked it out to the media? I'm so grateful to say that no one in my family has or had cancer but if they did I would hope that this is a real thing. I also agree with what Capuano said about the cancer cells developing an immunity to the drug except it wouldn't be an immunity because cancer develops from our own cells and the cure for cancer is to fix our cell mutations that went wrong. So if cancer is cured there is probably something else that will go wrong in our bodies and we will need to figure it out. Who really knows?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I'd like to commend Matt for choosing such a controversial topic. Like the posts before me, I too am confused about what to think. On one hand it makes sense to be. Statistics show 500,000 people per year die of cancer. As terrible and morbid as it is, without this death rate we would possibly face overpopulation. However, on the other hand look at how many people have lost someone they know to cancer. Whoever dies from it is someone's family member; whether it be mother, father, grandparent, brother, sister, you name it. Its sickening to me to think that someone would possibly be out there being okay with the fact that some people never see their 1st birthday, or 2nd or 3rd (etc.).
ReplyDeleteI had never ever heard this "conspiracy theory" before but when I heard about it, it kind of made sense. Just look at all the technology that the world has produced in the last 100 years. Also, take the swine flu vaccination. The swine flu became a popular news sensation around spring of last year. Now, about 6 months later, we already have a vaccine on the market. We have the resources to cure cancer so why aren't we using them?
But then again, it could be a conspiracy theory. Personally, I hold out hope that someday families as well as individuals will not have to go through the stress and loss that comes with this dreaded disease.
I am also one of the few who completely agree with Matt's initial post. If we think about things logically, I think that we would all agree that in a society where we have made so many immense strides and advancements forward in every field, there must be a better and easier way to cure cancer than the chemotherapy and radiation treatments being used today. After all of the studies done on cancer and all of the brilliant minds that were determined to find a cure, I feel very strongly that a cure for cancer is out there.
ReplyDeleteThis post has caused a lot of outrage, which is understandable. No one wants to hear that a loved one suffered or even died from cancer when there is a better treatment or even a cure in existence. While I would like to believe that the majority of humans are good, it is not hard to believe that major health care companies would keep this cancer cure a secret because of money. With 400 billion dollars going towards health care companies every year because of cancer treatments, I can believe that those who know of a cure for cancer would keep it a secret.
I don't beleive this for a second. If you've ever had to watch somebody suffer through this disease, you'll know what I mean. I lost my papa in 7th grade, my uncle in 10th, my bestfriend in 11th and my grandmother has stage three breast cancer right now. I don't mean to have anyone feel pity on me, but until you've known somebody who has died of this disease, your entire outlook on it will change. As somebody who has lost this many people to cancer, this article is heartwrenching.
ReplyDeleteToo many people have watched loved ones whither away to allow this to happen.
And if this is happening, then this government should be disgusted with themselves, because if it is, they're the reason my friend never made it to her high school graduation, or never got married, or never had children.
I am not sure if I believe this, but if it true I do feel disgusted. I personally believe that this miracle drug is most likely still waiting on tests and other side effects. I think that if this drug was really as good as it seems then it would have been all over the news. I don't think that its necessarily a conspiracy to get people to spend money on it. Even though it costs more money to make chemotherapy, the money that would be given for a cure for cancer would be a lot more. And besides, most of the products we buy don't cost much, but the price is raised significantly in order to make a profit. In this case, most people will give up their life savings if it means they can live. I'm sure if this drug really does do the trick, i will be hearing more about it soon.
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to believe that this drug is being withheld because of the fear of losing money. If there is a cure to cancer out there, I think anyone would do anything to be the one to discover it. Think of the rewards of being the one who found the cure to cancer. You would be a hero in the world's eyes and would go down in every history book for the eternity of humankind. If this drug has been proven to kill almost all cancer cells, then something has to be done for it to become publicly known. I never heard about this until reading this blog, and to me that is very sad. This should be making headlines and the talk of a possibility of a cancer cure should be prominent among us. Something needs to be done so that the public is aware of this "miracle drug"--if it is in fact one.
